This directness of expression, combined with the quality of hand-spun natural wool, gives tribal rugs a character that workshop rugs rarely match.
Tribal rug weaving is among the oldest textile traditions in the world. Nomadic peoples of Central Asia, Persia, and the Caucasus wove rugs for practical purposes — as floor coverings, tent decorations, saddlebags, and dowry items — long before the development of urban workshop production. The designs encoded in tribal rugs carry cultural and symbolic meaning specific to each tribe, and many patterns have remained essentially unchanged for centuries. The 19th century saw increased Western interest in tribal rugs as collectible objects, which eventually influenced production — some tribal weavers began producing for the export market — but the finest tribal rugs remain those made for the weavers' own use.

Tribal rugs use natural dyes that can be sensitive to pH and temperature. Dye testing before washing is essential, particularly for older pieces.
Hand-spun wool has a different texture and absorbency than commercial wool. It requires gentler handling and more careful drying to prevent matting.
Most tribal rugs have wool foundations (unlike city rugs with cotton foundations). Wool foundations are more forgiving but require thorough rinsing to remove all cleaning chemistry.
Tribal rugs used as floor coverings accumulate deep grit that vacuuming cannot remove. Full submersion washing is needed to release it without damaging the pile.
Repair fibers must approximate the hand-spun character of the original wool — commercial machine-spun wool creates a visible mismatch in texture and sheen.

Tribal rugs often have hand-wrapped wool selvedges (side cords) that unravel with wear. Re-wrapping must match the original in fiber and technique.
Many tribal rugs have flatwoven kilim ends that fray or unravel. Repair requires flatweave technique, not pile knotting.
Tribal rugs are valued for their authenticity and the evidence of use. Restoration should stabilize and preserve — not attempt to make the rug look new.
Natural dye color matching
Matching natural dyes for restoration requires knowledge of the specific plant and mineral sources used by each tribal tradition.
Tribal wool rugs are particularly vulnerable to moth damage. Restoration requires treating the infestation and re-knotting with hand-spun matched fibers.
Worn tribal rugs with exposed foundations need structural stabilization before any pile restoration to prevent further damage.
Tribal rug appraisal requires identifying the specific tribe, region, and approximate age — distinctions that significantly affect value. A Qashqai rug from the 19th century and a modern Pakistani reproduction may look superficially similar to an untrained eye but differ enormously in value.
