Our Rug Cleaning Process

Extreme close view of individual knots and the cotton foundation

A thorough, step-by-step approach developed over decades of caring for Richmond's finest rugs — from everyday area rugs to irreplaceable Persian heirlooms.

Why Process Matters

Not all rugs are the same, and neither is our cleaning approach. Before we touch a single fiber, we evaluate your rug's construction, fiber type, dye stability, and condition. This inspection determines the exact cleaning method we use — because the wrong technique can cause irreversible damage to delicate wool, silk, or antique rugs. Our process is methodical, gentle, and proven.

Free Pick-Up & Intake Inspection

We pick up your rug at no charge anywhere in the Richmond area.We document its condition, note any existing damage, stains, or wear, and photograph it for our records. You receive a full assessment before any cleaning begins.

Fiber & Dye Testing

We test each rug's fiber content and dye stability before selecting a cleaning method. Wool, silk, cotton, synthetic, and blended fibers each respond differently to water, temperature, and cleaning agents. Dye testing ensures colors won't bleed or fade during the wash — a critical step for antique and hand-knotted rugs.

Dry Soil Removal

Before any wet cleaning, we remove dry particulate soil from deep within the rug pile using specialized dusting equipment. This step extracts the grit and debris that vacuuming alone can't reach — the same abrasive particles that slowly cut rug fibers from the inside out over time.

Pre-Treatment & Spot Work

Stubborn stains — pet urine, red wine, oil, and other difficult soils — are pre-treated with targeted solutions matched to the stain type and fiber. We address problem areas before the full wash so they receive maximum dwell time and the best possible outcome.

Full Immersion Hand Wash

Your rug is fully immersed and hand-washed using pH-balanced, fiber-safe cleaning solutions. We work the solution through the pile by hand, following the direction of the weave to protect the foundation and fringe. This thorough wash removes embedded soils, allergens, bacteria, and odors that surface cleaning methods simply can't reach.

Thorough Rinse

Complete rinsing is essential — any residual cleaning solution left in the fibers will attract soil and cause rapid re-soiling. We rinse each rug multiple times until the water runs completely clear, ensuring no detergent residue remains in the pile or foundation.

Controlled Drying

Rugs are dried in a controlled environment with proper airflow to prevent mildew, color migration, and shrinkage. We never use high heat, which can damage natural fibers and cause dyes to shift. Drying time varies by rug thickness and fiber type — we never rush this step.

Final Grooming & Quality Inspection

Once dry, each rug is groomed to restore the natural lay of the pile, fringes are cleaned and straightened, and the rug undergoes a final quality inspection. We check for any remaining spots, assess the overall result, and confirm the rug meets our standards before it leaves our facility.

Free Delivery Back to You

Your freshly cleaned rug is carefully rolled, wrapped in protective packaging, and delivered back to your home at no charge. We place it back in its original location and make sure you're completely satisfied with the results.

We clean rugs exclusively — not carpets, not upholstery as a side service. Every technician is trained specifically in rug fiber types, construction methods, and the unique challenges of hand-knotted and antique pieces.

We come to you anywhere in the Richmond area. No hauling a heavy rug to a drop-off location — we handle the logistics so you don't have to.

If you're not completely satisfied with the results, we'll make it right. We stand behind every rug we clean.

Common questions

That depends far more on the rug than on the calendar. The wash is the predictable part; controlled drying is not something to hurry, because a foundation that goes back down still damp will announce itself later as a smell. Repair work is scheduled on top of the wash once the assessment is finished.

You do not. Collection is booked around your schedule, and plenty of people simply leave the rug rolled inside a front door or a vestibule. The written assessment and the figure both reach you before any work is authorized.

Size, construction and condition all move the number, so the honest answer is that we quote after looking rather than before. A figure offered sight unseen on a hand-knotted piece is invented. The assessment itself is free, and you are under no obligation afterwards.

Not if the salts are actually removed. The crystals sit down in the foundation, and any method that only wets the pile leaves them there to reactivate the next humid week. Flushing the rug right through is the only thing that clears them out. Long or repeated soaking may also have damaged the dye permanently, and that gets flagged at assessment rather than discovered at the end.

Every rug is dye-tested first; nothing goes into water untested. Unstable dyes — often an older red, sometimes a later synthetic — get a lower temperature, a shorter time in the bath, or a surface method instead of immersion.

Usually, and age is rarely what decides it — the state of the foundation is. We look at the structure before anything else, and a rug that needs securing gets that done first, because a weak foundation does not survive being handled wet.

No. Anything done on the floor treats the top of the pile and drives the rest downward into a foundation that then has to dry in place, on your hardwood. Soil leaves a rug through the back, which means the rug has to come off the floor to be washed at all.

Send the approximate size and whatever you know about where the rug has been living — hardwood, a basement, a room that runs on radiator heat all winter. We’ll answer with an estimate and a pick-up slot. No figure is settled before the rug has been measured and inspected in person.
